German Chocolate Brownie
There’s a relatively new sweet shop in Decatur that serves up lots of different types of cookies. I first heard about it when I saw some of my Facebook friends pining away for some of its cookies. When a student of mine told me she worked there, I stopped by that afternoon to give it a try. As I walked in, I could see that cookies are the name of the game. Aside from the freshly baked cookies in the cases, there were beautifully packaged cookies to buy as takeaway gifts. You can also have custom cookies made here for any occasion. From wedding cakes to Mickey Mouse, there are custom cookies to suit any occasion.
Daisy Sugar Cookie
The friendly employee helped me decide which cookies to try. She mentioned that several of their most popular were already sold out for the day, so I chose a german chocolate brownie, a daisy sugar cookie, an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie, and a peanut butter no bake cookie. For a much lower price than other bakeries, I was on my way. All of the treats were tasty, but my favorite was the German chocolate brownie. The brownie base was a bit drier than I prefer (I’m the girl that pulls my brownies out of the oven right before they’re set in the middle), but the coconut, chocolate, and nut topping made for a delicious combination.
Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie
The oatmeal chocolate chip cookie was halfway dipped in chocolate and was a solid example of its kind, although not exceptional. I think that some higher quality chocolate for dipping might take this cookie over-the-top. The peanut butter no-bake cookie, which was impressive in size, was just like the ones you’ve made on top of the stove, minus the chocolate. It was sweet and peanut-buttery…who can complain about that? The least tasty treat was the sugar cookie. The cookie itself was thicker than I like and the chocolate overwhelmed the delicate flavor of the cookie. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t memorable either. Mel’s is a tasty place, and I’d love to come back and try its most popular items next time.
Peanut Butter No-Bake Cookie
  • Mel’s is located in Funland. Although Funland is past its glory days, maybe shops like Mel’s can bring it back.
  • There’s more to this place than cookies. Stop by and try its lunch too.
  • Mel’s even makes cereal rice treats look tasty: a feat in my book.

This place is great and it deserves way more than a three rating.
